HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
In second grade students will have nightly homework (Monday-Thursday) in the following subjects:
Spelling: Students will receive spelling lists on Monday. Due to the fact that all students are learning at different levels I have a variety of spelling lists to meet all students needs. Students take a pre-test on Monday morning to determine which list they will receive. The spelling list are either grade level or challenge level. It does not matter which list your child receives. Do not be discouraged if they change lists from week to week or never get a challenge list. Depending on what spelling patterns your child is familiar with will determine their list. They will get the list that is best for them and will help them succeed in with learning their spelling!
Each Monday when the list goes home it will be attached to a weekly spelling contract. Each night your child will get to choose a fun activity to do to practice their spelling words. Parents initial and the student returns ONLY THE CONTRACT back to school on Friday.
Each Friday students have a spelling test on the weeks words.
Math: Everyday Math Home links are sent home each night to reinforce the skill and lesson taught that day. On the back of most of the home links there is a math facts practice page where students write in an activity they did to practice their subtraction or addition may facts. Examples could be flashcards, computer game or website, board game, or a parent could quiz them on facts. Students only need to practice math facts for 5 minutes per night but may do it longer if they choose. Parents also sign math fact practice sheet.
Reading Log: On Mondays students bring home a weekly reading log. They choose 5 out of the 7 nights in a week to read for 20 minutes. They log what they read and parents sign off on the reading log. Reading logs are returned on Monday mornings.
*Please remember homework is one area assessed on the report card. Homework is important to reinforce and practice skills and prepare students for the following year.
